Wood fencing comes in a variety of colors, designs, and heights. The style you choose will likely be determined by the fence's function. A picket fence will provide charm but very little additional security. A privacy fence will keep out your neighbor's pets and other unwanted intruders. Each type of fence also comes in a variety of different wood species.

Post-and-Rail (or Split-rail) Fence
Cost: Most Affordable

The Good:

- Easy to install
- Rustic look
- Ranch-style, used to contain livestock
- Repairs are easy
- Commonly found in the southwestern U.S.

The Bad:

- Animals may be able to escape (although you can add wire mesh to prevent this from happening)
- Very little privacy

Picket Fence
Cost: Affordable

The Good:

- Classic, traditional look
- Variety of design choices
- Spacing between posts can vary

The Bad:

- Minimal security
- Not much privacy



Privacy Fence
Cost: More expensive

The Good:

- Lots of designs (lattice top, basketweave, etc.)
- Secure and strong
- Will keep out nosy neighbors
- Shadowbox styles look good from both sides

The Bad:

- Difficult to see over
- More expensive
- More wood to paint or stain
