Wood Fence Species
By ProMatcher Staff
The most popular wood species used for wood fences are cedar, redwood, and southern yellow pine.
Western Red Cedar is an excellent wood because it has a natural resistance to moisture and insects.
Redwood
Southern Yellow Pine is a fast growing wood and is most often the least expensive type of wood. Pine is commonly pressure treated to improve its resistance to moisture and insects. Downside to pressure treated wood is that you often cannot paint it immediately upon installation. There is no specific time period. You will know it is time to paint your pressure treated fence once it stops beading water. If it soaks it up, it is ready to paint. Use an oil based primer and a latex paint. If you use stain, use an oil based stain. If you choose not to paint, then a water repellent may be applied immediately upon installation.

Black Locust
